Pioneer Woman Strawberry Jam Ingredients

  • 5 cups of hulled and mashed strawberries (measure after mashing)
  • 4 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, strained
  • 1 package of powdered fruit pectin (approximately 1.75 ounces or 49 grams)
  • 7 cups of granulated sugar

Special Equipment Needed:

  • Large canning pot (large enough to completely submerge the jars in water)
  • Canning tongs
  • Eight 8-ounce mason jars with lids and screw-on rings
  • Wide-mouth canning funnel
  • Canning rack

How To Make Pioneer Woman Strawberry Jam

  1. Prepare the Jars and Lids:Place the mason jars in a large hot water bath canner or a large pot. Cover with water and bring to a simmer. Simmer the center lids in a separate saucepan full of water. Keep the jars and lids hot until ready to use, but do not boil.
  2. Make the Jam:In a separate pot, combine the mashed strawberries and lemon juice. Stir in the pectin until fully dissolved. Bring the mixture to a full rolling boil over high heat, a boil that doesn’t stop bubbling when stirred. Add all the sugar at once and return to a rolling boil. Boil vigorously for 1 minute and 15 seconds. Skim off any foam with a metal spoon.
  3. Fill and Seal the Jars:Carefully remove one jar at a time from the simmering water, pouring the water back into the pot. Using a wide-mouth funnel, fill each jar with the hot jam, ensuring a consistent liquid/fruit ratio. Leave about 1/4 inch of headspace at the top of the jars. Run a clean knife or a thin spatula around the inside of the jars to remove any air bubbles. Wipe the rims with a moist towel to remove any jam residue. Take the lids from the simmering water, dry them, and place them in the jars. Apply the screw bands until finger-tight (do not over-tighten).
  4. Process the Jars:Place the filled jars on the canning rack and lower them into the boiling water in the canning pot. Ensure jars are completely submerged. Cover the pot and return the water to a full boil. Boil for 10 to 12 minutes (adjust the time for your altitude if necessary). Turn off the heat and let the jars stand in the hot water for an additional 5 minutes.
  5. Cool and Store:Remove the jars using a jar lifter, keeping them upright. Place them on a towel in a draft-free area and let them sit undisturbed for 24 hours. After 24 hours, check the seals by pressing the center of each lid. If the lid does not pop up and down, the jar is sealed. Store sealed jars in a cool, dark place.

Canning Tips:

  • Ensure your hands, equipment, and work surfaces are clean before starting.
  • Jars should be free of any chips or cracks.
  • Use tongs or jar lifters to handle hot sterilized jars.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for preparing lids and bands.

How To Store Strawberry Jam

  • In the Pantry:Unopened jars of strawberry jam can be stored in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry or cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources. This helps preserve the color and flavor of the jam. Properly sealed, they can last up to one year.
  • Refrigerate:After opening a jar of strawberry jam, keep it refrigerated with the lid tightly closed to prevent contamination and preserve flavor. Opened jam typically lasts in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.
  • Freeze:For extended storage, strawberry jam can be frozen. Ensure the jam is in a freezer-safe container with some space at the top as the jam expands when frozen. It can be kept frozen for up to 1 year. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before using.

What To Eat With Strawberry Jam

Strawberry Jam pairs well with fresh scones, buttered toast, plain yogurt, and vanilla ice cream. It also can be served alongside pancakes, waffles, croissants, and oatmeal.

FAQs

Can I Use Frozen Strawberries Instead Of Fresh Ones?

Yes, you can use frozen strawberries if fresh ones aren’t available. Thaw the strawberries completely and drain any excess liquid before measuring and using them in the recipe.

What Is The Purpose Of The Lemon Juice In The Recipe?

Lemon juice not only enhances the flavor of the strawberry jam but also helps in setting by providing the necessary acidity for the pectin to work effectively. This is crucial for achieving the right texture and firmness.

How Can I Tell If The Jam Is Set Properly?

You can use the “wrinkle test” to check if your jam is set. Place a small plate in the freezer before you start cooking. To test, spoon a little jam onto the cold plate and wait a few seconds. Push the jam with your finger; if it wrinkles, it’s set. If not, continue boiling and check every few minutes.

What Should I Do If My Jam Doesn’t Set?

If your jam hasn’t been set properly even after cooling, you can try reboiling it. Return the jam to the pot, add an additional teaspoon of lemon juice, and boil for another 5 minutes. Test again using the wrinkle test before canning.

Can I Reduce The Sugar In This Recipe?

Reducing the sugar in traditional jam recipes can affect both the setting and preservation qualities. If you wish to use less sugar, consider using a low-sugar pectin and follow the instructions on the pectin package for the best results.
